David Lazarus - Biography

With his curly hair and warm, clear vocals, singer-songwriter, actor and athlete David Lazarus is one of Australia's exciting up and coming new artists. At the humble age of just 19 years old, David's music, accompanied by his everlasting smile, takes one on an acoustic, rhythmical journey lyrically exploring the everyday joys of life and the simple pleasures we encounter.

Originally from South Africa and brought up among five sisters, the teenager's uniqueness comes out through his maturity and simplicity. Influenced by the works of many artists including Jack Johnson and John Mayer, David's melodies and stage presence has been known to hypnotize audiences, embarking them on a true journey into the teenagers unique experiences, travels and open heart. Having released his debut E.P, achieved a national sporting title, toured WA as a professional actor and currently on the edge of finishing his first studio album, it would be an understatement to say the young man possesses drive.

"David was our youngest ever performer at Song Lounge (The Ellington) at 17 years old. His stage presence, presentation, engagement and delivery all belied his years. I have no doubt that he is one artist with a very bright future ahead..." Bourby Webster, Director, North Street Music.

After winning gold in the Contemporary Vocal Open section at the North Perth Music Festival, as well as the top prize in the Open Singer-Songwriter category at the West Australian Music Eisteddfod, David went on to represent Australia at the World Championships of Performing Arts (held in L.A, USA). At this international event, described as the Olympics for performing arts, David took out gold in all five singer-songwriter categories he competed in.

"Aside from being talented in music, Lazarus also happens to be a gifted actor. This multi-skilled young talent had his first introduction to the acting scene at just 9 years old, where he played the child lead in the feature film Sumuru, directed by academy award nominee Darryl Roodt. The film was the first of a long list of achievements that built Lazarus' acting career." Marion Lopez, 3rd Degree News

David played the lead role in Ronan's Escape which has won numerous awards around the world, most notable winning Best International Film at the Hollywood Shorts International Film Festival, held in Hollywood, California. As well as film, David is also involved in the theatre world - touring Western Australia, playing the lead role in A Class Act Theatre's production of Cyber Busters. He has also appeared on National TV in the kid's TV series Wormwood (Disney Channel) and The Sleepover Club 2 (Nickelodeon). Combining his two talents, this rising star has performed in several musicals, most renowned playing The Artful Dodger in Oliver.

But singing and acting are far from being the only two strings weaving David's identity:

Since moving to Perth in 2003, David has done his state proud, representing Western Australia in cross-country running in consecutive years and being honoured as vice captain of the WA state school cross-country team in his last year of being a schoolboy. David also won the national title for the 2km beach run at the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships, held on Australia's Gold Coast.

David's ambitious nature has been evident since a young age; attesting to his 'always up for any challenge attitude', David, at just 11 years old, conquered Africa's highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro - a world record for being the youngest person to do so at the time!

So with many distinguished talents and passions, as well as studying a Bachelor of Commerce Degree at Curtin University, David is drawing success on many fronts at once. Leading a fully booked life, this teenager's everlasting ambition and hunger for life have enriched him both as an artist and as a person.
